I would like to extend a gracious thank you to all that helped make our February 4th campaign kick-off event with Majority Leader Eric Cantor a great success. The event was held on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and attracted almost 300 people! It is great knowing our re-election efforts have started with so much strong support.

We are less than 30 days away from the March 13th Republican Primary Election. Our momentum is building and we must remain focused for the next 26 days. South Mississippians need a leader in Washington representing conservative values of smaller government and less spending. I want to keep fighting for you and I ask for your support once again.

With your help, I will continue to fight to fully repeal Obamacare, stop runaway spending, balance our budget, and maintain a strong national defense. I will continue to fight to stop Obama’s reckless policies that stifle private sector job growth and work to create an American energy policy focused on reducing our dependence on foreign oil, such as building the Keystone Pipeline.

I was fortunate to have your help in 2010 and I’m asking you to help me again in the March 13th Primary. We have a great team in place but we need your help! We are looking for volunteers to assist with phone banks to help spread our message throughout the 4th Congressional district. Our phone banks will be running from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. We have call lists for the entire district and you can make calls from the comfort of your own home. It Has Been an Honor Serving You

It has been an honor and privilege serving as your elected representative in Washington over the past 13 months. My conservative colleagues and I made great strides this year to stop the liberal big government, tax-and-spendculture that exists in Washington.In 2010, I campaigned to end the bailout era, repeal the government takeover of healthcare, reign in our deficit spending and pay down our mountain of national debt. I kept those promises when I voted in Congress, but the President and the liberals in the Senate continue to ignore the people’s cry for smaller, more responsible government.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE

House conservatives changed the conversation in Washington from how much to spend to how much to cut from the budget. And in order to truly change the culture of Washington, I believe Congress needs to lead by example. That is why I voluntarily forfeited my congressional pension and voted to cut my congressional budget twice in the past year. In addition, over the past two fiscal years, I voted for a record $10 trillion in spending cuts.

PATH TO PROSPERITY

When I began my first term last year I set out to chart a new course for America’s future. I endorsed a plan known as the Path to Prosperity, which would cut spending by $6.2 trillion, and simplify the tax code to encourage businesses to expand and investors to take risk and get our economy working again. It addressed our crushing debt burden by laying out a plan to strengthen Medicare and ensuring Social Security’s solvency. It would have repealed the government takeover of healthcare and defunded Planned Parenthood. House Republicans had the courage to go on record with a long-term plan for long-term solutions to America’s problems, but the Senate failed to even over a budget or a path forward for America

CUT, CAP AND BALANCE

I co-sponsored the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act of 2011, which would immediately cut spending, cap government spending, and require a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution.

LEADERSHIP FOR SOUTH MISSISSIPPI

As Assistant Republican Whip, I worked with leadership to ensure a strong balanced budget amendment was added to the agenda of the 112th Congress.

GULFPORT — House Majority Leader Eric Cantor was on hand Saturday night to help U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo kick off his first re-election campaign at the Gulfport Yacht Club.

“The country rose up in 2010 and said we need a new generation of leaders, rose up and elected 89 new Republican members of Congress,” Cantor, R-Va., told the crowd of Palazzo supporters. “The Mississippi Gulf Coast has a real leader among that 89 in Steven Palazzo … . This is a guy who is a true patriot. He is a great American and he is in his heart a great Mississippian.

“You can really tell he loves this state. When he’s in committee, in the Armed Services Committee or the science committee or on the floor of the House, when other members of Congress hear or see Steven Palazzo get up to talk, they listen.”

Cantor said this was his first trip to South Mississippi.

“I’ve been to Jackson and been to Tupelo, but this is my first time here,” he said. “I kind of like it. I told Lisa (Palazzo) and Steve I want to bring my wife back (for a vacation).”

Artist Marlin Miller, who has drawn national attention for his carvings from trees killed by Hurricane Katrina, presented Palazzo with a carved statue of an eagle, and gave Cantor a pen, also carved from a Katrina tree.

Cantor said Congress and the nation face major challenges.

“We’ve got to put our foot down and stop it, stop spending money we don’t have,” Cantor said. “That money belongs to families and small business men and women who earned it and not to the government. … If we don’t repeal Obamacare, this country will never be the same.”

Cantor said Congress has to be committed to “the grand promise of America — that each generation in America has it a little better than the ones who came before.” He talked of how his grandparents, who fled czarist Russia to America, helped his family achieve that promise through hard work. He said his grandmother was widowed young and had to work hard raising children and running a small grocery store.

“I know today she’d be blown away to know her son is a member of the U.S. Congress, holding the seat James Madison once held.”

Palazzo’s campaign kickoff, a $50-per-ticket fundraiser, drew about 300 people. Palazzo thanked his supporters.

“You’ve been extremely kind, generous and helpful to me,” Palazzo said, and he thanked Cantor. “With the leadership of my friend and colleague, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, we’ve been fighting the good fight for the last 12 months. He’s been fighting the good fight for conservative values for the last 10 years.”

In the March 13 primary, Palazzo faces Republicans Ron Vincent and Cindy Burleson, both of Hattiesburg, then will face a Democrat and a Reform Party candidate in the general election Nov. 6. Palazzo avoided drawing several potential big-name challengers for his first re-election. He started this year, and his new campaign, with more than $300,000 in his campaign coffers, according to his Jan. 31 campaign-finance report.

Harrison County Supervisor Windy Swetman III, a friend and supporter of Palazzo, said he and other local government and business leaders would be meeting with Cantor after the fundraiser Saturday night.

“I think it’s a great compliment to South Mississippi that he’s here and shows the type of confidence the leadership in Washington has in Rep. Palazzo,” Swetman said. “For local people, this is a good opportunity to talk one-on-one with the majority leader about our needs and the direction things are going here, and to thank him — tell him we appreciate all the help the federal government has given this area.”

House Republicans demonstrate commitment to fiscal responsiblity

Friends -

The conservative freshman class swept back Congress on a pledge to end the
reckless spending spree. We’ve promised to fundamentally change how Washington
operates and we’re holding true to that commitment.
Last week, the House Republican Conference passed an historic ban on earmarks
in the upcoming 112th Congress. I supported this measure because it
demonstrates Republicans are serious about spending reform.

According to the non-partisan Citizens Against Government Waste, there were
9,129 earmarked projects inserted into FY 2010 appropriations bills, totaling
$16.5 billion. While earmarks have contributed to our unbearable debt and
deficit spending, it is not the silver bullet to ending the spending spree.

Our near fourteen trillion dollar national debt was not created over night.
It’s due to decades of deficit spending by Congress. However, to govern
responsibly and to restore economic prosperity, significant spending reform
must be enacted immediately.

We must also reform entitlement spending, break apart and work to repeal the
devastating spending mandated by ObamaCare and force the Washington bureaucracy
to trim the fat off their wasteful budgets and defunct spending programs.

Voters are ready for common sense spending reform. On Election Day the American
people loudly stated they want an end to unchecked spending. Republicans
promised to cut the wasteful spending and we’re keeping the promise. The
earmark ban is a first step in showing we’re committed to change the way
Washington operates forever.

Tomorrow, Mississippi embarks on a historic election. We have the opportunity to have Republican leadership in every statewide office, keep control of the state Senate, win the House and install a conservative Speaker of the House.

Leading the ballot tomorrow is Lt. Governor Phil Bryant. As Phil Bryant carries on Governor Barbour’s legacy, we must also vote in a Republican team for Lt. Governor Bryant to lead.

Palazzo Responds to POTUS Joint Session Speech

Friends,

South Mississippians sent me to Washington to get the budget under control and
stop the reckless spending. I believe a Balanced Budget Amendment (BBA) is the
only way to do this. President Obama and the Democrats, however, oppose any
BBA, arguing that it is unnecessary. Instead of addressing their addiction to
spending, they use cheap shots and scare tactics. Instead of listening to the
74 percent of Americans that support a BBA, the president and Congressional
Democrats ignore the American people and continue to play political games.

President Obama’s spending spree has driven the national debt to over $3.7
trillion dollars in just two and half years in office. If we do not alter our
current course, the president’s failed economic policies will more than double
federal spending over the next decade. A BBA is a practical, common-sense
approach to fixing our spending problem. It is a fail-safe tool that forces
Congress to pass a balanced budget.

The House Republicans that were sent here in November are holding the line to
reduce federal spending, prevent tax hikes, and sustain America’s economy. As
a CPA, I have done the math. I know that a BBA is the only way to accomplish
these goals and put the brakes on congressional spending.

During my campaign and my time in Congress, South Mississippians have
overwhelmingly lent their support for a BBA. My job is to represent their
views and concerns, and I will continue to fight for a BBA requirement and to
do what my constituents sent me to do, and that is; stop the spending.

Update since Election Day

On Election Day we stood together to put an end to the Obama-Pelosi liberal agenda. The road to doing so was challenging, but we stood strong. Now, the real work of restoring conservatism to governance and creating real Mississippi jobs has begun.

Since Election Day I have stayed busy. I’ve been meeting with business leaders to better understand their needs to create jobs as well as meeting with local political leaders to learn how I can solve their needs in Congress. I’ve also dedicated a large portion of my time to attending events across the district and staying visible.

Yesterday, I was honored to attend several Veterans Day ceremonies. In Wiggins, I spoke to a crowd of patriots who gathered to watch the unveiling of the Medal of Honor monument. It is my understanding that this is the only such monument in the country and it honors those Mississippians who have earned our nation’s highest military honor.

To be an effective Member of Congress, I must also build a top class Congressional staff. We have been interviewing and placing team members. In the coming weeks, we will announce our complete Congressional staff. They will make you proud.

On Sunday, I will depart for Freshman Orientation. While at orientation, I will meet my incoming colleagues, but I will also request my committee assignments. The military is the lifeblood of South Mississippi both economically and culturally. As such, I am actively seeking a position on the House Armed Services Committee. On the committee, I will be a champion for military and veteran issues. I am also requesting to be placed on several other committees that will directly benefit South Mississippi.

I want to again thank you for giving me the opportunity to be your voice in Washington, D.C. In 2010, we proved that South Mississippi does matter. I intend to take our voice and shout it loudly to the Washington, D.C. bureaucrats and politicians to make sure they know that we want legislation reflective of true conservatism. I will make you proud. Thank you for the opportunity to serve.
